MIgraine Treatment

Fast & Efficient Migraine Treatment

It is estimated that migraines impact more than 10% of people around the world, and occur most often in those ranging in age from 20 to 50 years old.

Ketamine is a great option for patients that have not responded to traditional therapies. In most cases, patients who respond best to these treatments are experiencing severe migraines.

A recent review from the British Journal of Pharmacology showed that short-term infusions of ketamine produce potent analgesia during the administration only, while three studies on the effects of prolonged infusions (4-14 days) show long-term analgesic effects lasting up to 3 months following the infusion.

Some people experience warning signs that indicate a migraine may be developing:

How Does Ketamine Help With Migraines?

Migraines often occur on one side of the head and can cause intense headaches that involve throbbing pain or a pulsing sensation that can last hours. Patients presenting to our clinic have seen a neurologist and other causes of headache will have to be excluded prior to receiving ketamine treatments.

Research suggests ketamine works in relieving pain by a similar mechanism in the treatment of other chronic pain disorders. The drug helps rewire the brain and change the signaling of the nerve cells to stop pain by acting on the brain’s NMDA receptors. Most of the research on the benefits of ketamine for pain exists in the CRPS population however there is a growing amount of substantial evidence of its use in migraine and other chronic headache disorders that do not respond to conventional treatments.

Patients presenting to our clinic have typically been under the care of a neurologist and have tried conventional treatments. If not, you will be required to see a neurologist in order to obtain the proper studies needed to approve you for ketamine treatments.

During Your Ketamine Infusion

During treatment, we go above and beyond to make sure all of our patients feel as comfortable as possible in their own private rooms. Infusions typically last 2 to 4 hours depending on the severity and chronicity of the headache.

Doses for migraines tend to be higher than for mood disorders; the dosing is most similar to chronic pain conditions (about 2 to 5 times the depression dose).

You will be continuously monitored in a private room throughout your treatment to ensure you remain safe and comfortable throughout your treatment session. The most common side effects, nausea, and dissociation (a feeling of being out of body) are typically easily treated with adjuvant medications.

The longer the infusions the longer the recovery, but not by much. Once the infusion finishes it will generally take anywhere from ten to thirty minutes for the patient to start feeling like the psychoactive effects of the drug are gone. The beneficial effects of the infusion should be evident as soon as the infusion is finished.

During your intake, we will explain more about the process, set expectations, and answer all of your questions.
